What "Museum Quality" Actually Means: 250 gsm, Archival Inks and Giclée, Explained

Three phrases do most of the work in art-print listings, and only two of them can be verified. A plain-language breakdown of paper weight, ink chemistry and the word Giclée — plus the specs that are pure decoration.

"Museum quality" is three separate claims bundled into one phrase, and only two of them can be checked. 250 gsm means one square metre of the sheet weighs 250 grams — roughly double a high-street poster at 120-150 gsm, and about 80% of the weight of heavy cotton rag at 300-320 gsm. Archival pigment ink means the colourant is solid particles suspended in fluid rather than dye dissolved into it, which is why standardised light-fade testing gives pigment prints behind glass ratings past 100 years while dye-based inkjet typically lands between 15 and 40. Giclée means an inkjet print. That is all it has ever meant: the word was invented in 1991 by one printmaker in California and has never been regulated by anyone.

Two measurable specs, then, and one piece of vocabulary. Here is what each does and does not guarantee, how to judge a sheet by hand in under a minute, and which numbers are sold to you despite meaning nothing.

Gsm is weight, not thickness — and 250 is where a poster stops feeling cheap

Gsm is grams per square metre: cut one square metre of the stock, weigh it, that is the number. It is independent of sheet size, so an A4 at 250 gsm and an A1 at 250 gsm are the same paper.

The failure modes below 200 gsm are physical, not aesthetic. Thin stock telegraphs light through from behind, so the frame backing shows as a faint ghost; it cockles — ripples — where the ink load is heaviest, because cellulose swells as it takes on water-based ink; and it creases at the corner the moment you slide it into a frame rebate.

At 250 gsm the sheet runs roughly 0.25-0.30 mm thick and holds itself flat when you lift it by one corner. That is the practical threshold. Above 300 gsm you are mostly buying tooth and handling weight, and heavy cotton rag genuinely misbehaves in thin clip frames and shallow rebates — it bows away from the glazing and springs at the corners.

Our judgement: do not pay a premium for 300+ gsm unless you specifically want the visible cotton texture of a rag paper and are framing it properly to suit.

The word Giclée is thirty-five years old and nobody owns it

The printmaker Jack Duganne coined it in 1991 at Nash Editions, the Manhattan Beach studio founded that same year by Graham Nash and Mac Holbert. They were printing fine art on a modified Iris 3047 — a continuous-flow inkjet machine built for commercial pre-press proofing, capable of sheets up to about 34 × 46 inches and costing six figures. Duganne wanted a term that did not sound like an office printer, and took it from the French gicleur, a nozzle.

Here is the irony worth knowing: those original Iris prints used dye inks, and early-1990s Iris editions became notorious for fading within a few years of display. The word that now signals permanence was born on a machine that had none.

Giclée tells you how the ink reached the paper. It says nothing about the ink, the paper, or how long either will survive.

No standards body owns the term, no certification exists, and nothing stops anyone selling a €70 desktop print on 120 gsm as a "Giclée fine art print". Treat it as a category, not a grade — then ask about the two things that are measurable: ink chemistry and substrate.

Pigment versus dye: the one spec that decides how long it lasts

Dye is a colourant dissolved at molecular level; it sinks into the paper coating and sits there exposed to ultraviolet light, ozone and humidity. Pigment is ground solid particles — sub-micron, encapsulated in resin — that sit in and on the coating as physical matter. Light has to destroy a particle, not a molecule.

That difference is why accelerated display-permanence testing separates the two so brutally. The standard method, formalised in ISO 18937 and popularised by Henry Wilhelm — whose 1993 book The Permanence and Care of Color Photographs is still the reference — runs samples at 450 lux for 12 hours a day behind glass and extrapolates to years on a wall. Modern pigment sets on matte fine art paper come out above 100 years; dye-based inkjet comes out far shorter. Our prints use archival pigment inks for exactly this reason.

"Archival" is no more regulated than "Giclée". The useful questions are: which ink set, and what number under what test conditions? A seller who cannot name the ink family is not making a claim, they are making a noise.

Matte, satin or gloss: matte wins in any room with a window

Gloss produces a deeper black. Measured as maximum density, glossy photo paper reaches roughly 2.3-2.5, matte fine art around 1.5-1.7 — so in a dark room, gloss genuinely looks punchier. In a normal living room it is a mirror.

Three reasons matte is the right default for framed wall art:

  1. Glare. A glossy surface reflects specularly. Put it opposite a window and you lose a third of the image from most standing positions. Matte scatters light diffusely, so the picture stays readable from every angle.
  2. You already have a gloss layer. Glass or acrylic glazing supplies one. A glossy print behind glazing gives you double reflections, and if the sheet touches the glass you get Newton's rings — iridescent contact patterns that are impossible to unsee.
  3. Bronzing. Pigment inks on glossy stock can show gloss differential: dense areas take on a faint metallic sheen at an angle. On matte, the effect does not exist.

Matte also does something specific for flat-colour work. Hard-edged geometric designs — the 35 Bauhaus prints especially — depend on adjacent colour fields reading as pure planes, and any surface sheen breaks that illusion. What twelve inks see that four cannot

Gamut is the set of colours a device can physically produce. A four-ink CMYK printer builds everything from cyan, magenta, yellow and black, and its weak regions are predictable: saturated oranges, deep leaf greens, violets and clean fire-engine reds. Each has to be mixed from two inks, and mixing costs saturation — the result lands muddier than the original.

A twelve-channel process adds dedicated orange, green, violet or red inks, light cyan and light magenta for smooth transitions, and two or three greys. Current professional fine art sets are built on this logic: Epson's UltraChrome PRO12 runs twelve channels, Canon's LUCIA PRO runs eleven pigments plus a chroma optimiser.

What that buys, concretely: the vermilion in a 1920s travel poster stays vermilion instead of drifting brick; the chlorophyll greens of a nineteenth-century botanical plate separate into distinct leaf tones rather than collapsing into one; skin tones on pulp covers avoid the orange cast four-ink printing gives them.

The grey channels matter more than people expect. Dedicated light-grey and photo-grey inks let a printer build neutral tones without leaning on colour ink, which is what keeps black-and-white photography and typographic work free of the green or magenta cast you see on cheap prints. It is also why the halftone textures in the 96 vintage posters hold their tonal steps instead of blocking up.

Judge a print in thirty seconds

  1. Tilt it under a lamp. A sheen shift between dark and light areas means gloss differential — glossy stock, and often dye.
  2. Find a large flat mid-grey. Any colour cast or horizontal banding means too few ink channels, or a worn print head.
  3. Hold it by one corner. At 250 gsm the sheet bends and springs back. At 150 gsm it folds under its own weight.
  4. Look at the paper white. A blue-white glow indicates heavy optical brightening agents — fluorescent additives that break down over years of light exposure and leave the paper yellower than it started. A museum matte white should read warm-neutral.
  5. Check type edges and fine lines. Halos and blocky artefacts mean the source was a low-resolution scan. That is not the paper's fault, and no printer fixes it.

Three specs that are pure decoration

Four-figure dpi numbers. "4800 dpi printing" describes droplet placement addressability, not image resolution. What matters is pixels per inch of the source file at final size, and at a normal viewing distance of one to two metres, 150 ppi on a 50×70 cm print (2,953 × 4,134 pixels) is indistinguishable from 300 ppi. A listing quoting four-figure dpi is quoting a number it does not use.

"Acid-free paper." ISO 9706, the permanence standard for alkaline-buffered paper, was published in 1994; alkaline stock has been the default for serious inkjet media ever since. Advertising it is like advertising seatbelts. The real acid risk in a framed print is the mount board, the backing card and the tape — buy conservation-grade mounts and hinge with gummed paper tape rather than pressure-sensitive tape.

Where prints actually die: sunlight, damp and tape

Museums display works on paper at around 50 lux and rotate them off the wall periodically. You do not need to live at 50 lux — a normal room sits at 200-500 — but direct sunlight through a window delivers 10,000 lux and upwards, and a print rated for a century under gallery conditions can shift visibly after two or three summers in that beam. The single most effective thing you can do is not hang it where the sun lands.

Is a Giclée print better than a normal inkjet print?

Not inherently — Giclée is a marketing word for inkjet, coined in 1991 by the printmaker Jack Duganne at Nash Editions, and no standards body regulates it. What actually separates a good print from a bad one is the ink chemistry (pigment rather than dye), the paper weight and coating, and the number of ink channels. Ask about those three things instead of the label.

How long do archival pigment art prints last?

Standardised display-permanence testing, run at 450 lux for 12 hours a day behind glass, gives modern pigment inks on matte fine art paper ratings above 100 years, well beyond what dye-based inkjet achieves. Those figures assume indirect light. Hang a print where direct sun lands on it and you can lose decades of that rating in a few summers.

Should I choose matte or glossy for a framed poster?

Matte, in almost every case. Gloss gives a deeper black (maximum density around 2.3-2.5 against matte's 1.5-1.7) but reflects specularly, so it mirrors any window in the room and doubles up on reflections behind glazing. Matte scatters light diffusely and stays readable from every viewing angle.

Does 'acid-free paper' mean a print will last longer?

On its own, no. ISO 9706, the permanence standard for alkaline-buffered paper, was published in 1994, and alkaline stock has been the default for serious inkjet media ever since. The acid that damages framed prints usually comes from the mount board, the backing card or pressure-sensitive tape, so spend the money on conservation-grade framing materials rather than on the claim.
